PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is getting its new 4x4km island map back to test servers, and it comes with a new name: Sanhok.
The name Savage, by which players know the map, is only a codename, according to PUBG.
Sanhok Map Testing To Begin Soon
The Sanhok map is inspired by various islands in Southeast Asia, including Thailand and the Philippines. The PUBG team came up with the name with this in mind, and so they combined two words to get Sanhok (pronounced sah-nok): สนุก (Thailand word for "fun," pronounced as sah-nook) and manok (Filipino word for "chicken," pronounced as mah-nok).
The team also announced the transition of the Closed Experimental Server into the Experimental Server. Players will be able to participate in this new round of testing as long as they have a copy of the game. Testing begins on May 10, 7 p.m. PDT, and ends on May 14, 4 a.m. PDT.
PUBG Corp. urges its player base to participate so that they can make changes based on the feedback.
Sanhok Features An Underground Cave System
According to the team's previous blog posts, the map will heavily feature things they liked on their trip to Thailand, such as a hole in the ground inspired by the Phraya Nakhon Cave. Sanhok will reportedly feature an underground cave system with various escape points, which is inspired by a cave system outside of Bangkok.
There also seems to be a pool in the middle of the cave system and stupas surrounding it, which are mound-like structures. The plan also looks to include makeshift wooden structures in the cave, new weapons, and special vehicles. The tuk-tuk, a three-wheeled motor vehicle popular in Thailand, will also make an appearance.
The map will also feature tropical trees, the assets of which they created through the process known as Photogrammetry. The first blog post detailed this process, which involves capturing a photo of an object at every possible angle and using a pad with color swatches for color correction.
The photos are then run through the software to produce a 3D model. This is apparently used for creating reality assets that are complex, such as trees, terrain, and more.
The PUBG team promises to talk more about the new weapons and vehicles before Sanhok is fully launched. It did not yet specify when the new map will be out, but PUBG Corp. mentioned that the PUBG update is only a few months away.
