AMC Theaters No Longer Accept MoviePass

MoviePass subscribers aren't happy with AMC Theaters. The largest movie theater chain started turning away MoviePass subscribers ahead of the weekend and without giving any valid reason.

It took several customers to express their disappointment on Twitter first before getting any clarification from AMC Guest Services.

AMC explained that MoviePass might be blocking the use of their subscription at multiple AMC locations.

"AMC has not restricted MoviePass acceptance at our theatres, nor have we heard from MoviePass about this. MoviePass customers should contact MoviePass for clarification," AMC Guest Services wrote.

AMC Theaters Not Accepting MoviePass

AMC Theaters cut off MoviePass subscribers in major cities across the United States including Boston, Chicago, Florida, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington.

However, as it turns out, AMC Theaters wasn't at fault. MoviePass cut off access from some of the chain's most successful locations.

  • AMC Empire 25 in New York, NY
  • AMC Loews Alderwood Mall 16 in Lynnwood, Washington
  • AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Illinois
  • Disney Springs at Walt Disney World
  • AMC Universal CityWalk 19 in Universal City, California
  • AMC Century City 15 in Los Angles, California

CEO Mitch Lowe Issues A Statement

CEO Mitch Lowe responded to MoviePass subscribers and issued an official statement in regard to the matter.

"As of today, you'll find a small handful of theaters are no longer available on our platform. Our number one goal as a company is to provide an accessible price-point for people to enjoy films the way they're meant to be seen: on the big screen," said Lowe.

Lowe advises customers that as relationships with movie theaters change, they should always check nearby locations if they're supported. Customers can check the list by going to MoviePass website or via the mobile app.

MoviePass Announces MoviePass Ventures

The news comes soon after MoviePass announced its subdivision called MoviePass Ventures. The company has made it clear that they want to work alongside film directors and not compete with them, so they can bring indie movies to theaters.
