Facebook has once again proven that its workplace environment and atmosphere are among the top choices among employees across industries all over the world. For the second year in a row, the social media company grabs the top spot for the "2018 Best Places to Work" within the technology sector.
Mark Zuckerberg's brainchild also claimed the top spot overall, raising the bar a notch higher compared to last year when it nabbed the number two spot.
Facebook Tops '2018 Best Places to Work'
According to employee reviews on Facebook, the company provides excellent compensation benefits, caring colleagues, and competent coworkers who are willing to assist in any way to achieve a team goal. Most reviews also point out the strong leadership that provides a clear picture of where the company is headed.
With its newest achievement, Facebook managed to beat big and established companies that are perennial favorites in the annual listing. Some of the runner-ups include consulting firm Bain & Company (#2), search engine company Google (#5), digital media publisher Blizzard Entertainment (#28), and tech royalty Apple (#84).
Tech Runner-Ups and Low Performers
Google managed to secure the fifth spot this year and has successfully appeared in the top 10 of the list in eight out of the last decade. On average, the reviews point out Google's intelligent and highly competent co-workers, exciting new products and services, and "perks and discounts on almost everything."
Meanwhile, Apple's appearance on this year's list is its lowest entry since Glassdoor began counting down the best places to work. At #84, the Cupertino-based manufacturer's negative reviews echo a similar cry -- no life and work balance.
Tech Companies Dominate
Every year, Glassdoor's list of the best companies to work for is seasoned with tech firms and companies. There are a few reasons for this --- first, tech jobs are mostly well compensated, and second, these companies often provide a good balance between work and fun.
As a result, the 2018 Best Places to Work have 28 companies coming from the tech industry alone, the highest group on the list. Companies from the retail and healthcare industries only have 11 listings respectively, while firms from the consulting, finance, and tourism sectors have six representatives each.
Glassdoor, which has been publishing its "best places to work" series for the past 10 years, ranks its best companies of the year using genuine employee reviews and interviews. Each user-submitted review is carefully checked to make sure each company gets actual ratings from its employees.
