Players have long noticed a third, unused subclass slot for each of Destiny's classes. Many assumed this might mean a third subclass option for each class would be coming sometime in Destiny's future. After all, it seems like just the kind of thing that might be featured in one of the game's upcoming expansions.
Turns out what many players assumed might not be the case. Speaking with Game Informer, lead Destiny designer Tyson Green says the third subclass slot is actually a leftover from a previous build of the game.
"The reason why there's that third subclass slot there, is that some people may recall that we used to have a mechanism for sealing a build and locking your choices in, which would give your build a boost," Green says. "The game would let you make another copy of that build. That's what the slot is there for. When you needed to make a copy of your arc titan build because you just locked the other one, we had to make room for that. So that's why the third slot is there."
Game Informer goes on to say that at one time the game did indeed have a system like this in place, where players could have multiple "builds" of the same subclass. Bungie ultimately opted to take a different approach to the subclass system. Then why leave a blank, third slot that goes unused in the final product? Turns out Green didn't dismiss the possibility of additional subclasses entirely.
"It shouldn't be read as a tacit promise, but the fact that subclasses are swappable should make players excited about the future," he says.
Bungie is currently getting ready to release the game's first expansion, The Dark Below, on Dec. 9 and will include new story missions, strikes, multiplayer maps, gear and a brand new six-man raid. House of Wolves will be the game's next expansion, and is slated to be released early next year. Might it include new subclass options? We'll have to wait and see, but in the meantime check out this gameplay trailer for The Dark Below.
