Spectre. That's the name of the highly anticipated 24th James Bond film, and the fourth for Daniel Craig.
It's a word that carries great significance to longtime Bond aficionados. "S.P.E.C.T.R.E." was the name of the global terrorist cabal that served as James Bond's longtime foil in the classic films. The organization has yet to turn up in the rebooted series starring Daniel Craig, though Quantum of Solace introduced a terrorist group called "Q.U.A.N.T.U.M." leading many to believe they would be the modern day equivalent of S.P.E.C.T.R.E.
Spectre was announced early this morning at a press conference streamed online from Pinewood Studios, where filming will begin this coming Monday. Skyfall director Sam Mendes and writers John Logan, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are all returning for this installment, as are Ralph Fiennes as the new M, Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny, and Ben Whishaw as Q.
Joining Craig & friends this go round are Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz as a character named Oberhauser (smart money says he's the villain); Sherlock's Moriarty, aka actor Andrew Scott, as a man named Denbigh; Monica Bellucci as Bond Girl Lucia Sciarra; Blue Is the Warmest Colour's Léa Seydoux as Bond Girl Madeleine Swann; and Guardians of the Galaxy's Dave Bautista as henchman Mr. Hinx. Spectre will be the typical globe-hopping adventure for 007, with location filming set for Mexico City, Morocco, Rome and Austria. The shoot is expected to run for seven months. Also introduced during the announcement was a brand new "Bond car" that will be seen in Spectre, the Aston Martin DB10.
Sony describes the plot this way:
A cryptic message from Bond's past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind Spectre.
Spectre hits British screens October 23, 2015, followed by American screens on November 6.
