More Wii U Games Could Hit Nintendo Switch, Says Company Exec

The Nintendo Switch console is off to a great start and it could get even more appealing, as more Wii U games could be in the cards.

The Wii U was never as successful as the Wii before it in terms of sales, but it still had its good parts and some Wii U games may soon find a new home on the Switch.

Nintendo is seeing strong demand for its new Switch console and new games, and while sales continue to grow, the company is also looking to do more to ensure it doesn't lose steam.

Hardware is just partly responsible for the market performance of a console, as available games can make it or break it. With that in mind, Nintendo is apparently looking to expand the collection of Switch games with some enhanced versions of popular Wii U titles.

Nintendo Switch Games

The new Nintendo Switch took the spotlight at the company's E3 event this year as expected, and a "Spotlight" presentation focused on upcoming games slated to hit the scene this year. Nintendo also mentioned ongoing initiatives for competitive multiplayer options, and ensured that it will continue to focus on a solid lineup for the console going further.

Speaking with Waypoint, Nintendo of America president and chief operating officer Reggie Fils-Aime revealed that revamped versions of Wii U games could join the Switch lineup. Popular games Pokken Tournament Deluxe and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for instance, were initially exclusive to the Wii U console, but Nintendo remastered them and released them for the Switch with more features and content. It now seems the company plans to go down the same path with more games, which might convince more Nintendo fans to upgrade to the new Switch.

Making Old Games Exciting Again

"[G]iven the install base of Wii U, there was some fantastic content that consumers did not get to play," says Fils-Aime. "So that creates certainly a business opportunity. On the other hand, one of the things that we've discussed internally is, there really needs to be an additional element to that game to make it fresh, and to further compel the consumer to buy in."

The executive explains that Pokken Tournament Deluxe is perhaps the best example to illustrate how additional features and content can make it appealing enough for fans to buy it. The same goes for Mario Kart 8, which brought an enhanced experience with the new version compared with the original game.

Fils-Aime adds that Nintendo has several opportunities with other good titles that may not have been as heavily played on the Wii U, but may be more appealing on the Switch with additional elements.

However, the executive only entertained the idea enough as to tease what's to come, but did not specify any games that would get a revamp for the Switch. One possibility could be the Super Smash Bros. hit, which is one of the most popular Nintendo franchises of all time. It would make sense to port it over to the Switch, and new features and characters could make it even more exciting. Most of Nintendo's popular franchises are expected to make their way to the Switch eventually, but no additional details are available at this point.
