Seemingly out of the blue, Samsung has just released a Pirates of the Caribbean edition of its Galaxy S8 flagship, complete with a fancy pirate-themed treasure chest, a wallpaper, and a case. Otherwise, the phone isn't any different than your standard Galaxy S8.
Samsung Galaxy S8: 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' Edition
The variant isn't entirely a surprise, though. Rumors about such a phone emerged last month, to the delight of Captain Jack Sparrow's fans. The phone isn't different in terms of aesthetics, unlike previous special edition smartphones launched by Samsung. So no pirate-themed skins or colors, unfortunately. Simply put, it looks just like an everyday Galaxy S8.
Chinese retailer JD started selling the Galaxy S8 Pirates of the Caribbean Edition on Friday, June 2, for around $880. Only one configuration is available at present, which comes with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage.
The phone comes with a special Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales theme, and features a customized treasure box featuring the Pirates of the Caribbean logo. Inside, there's a phone ring holder and a case, both of which bear the franchise's logo.
Again, as far as the specs go, the Pirates of the Caribbean Edition packs the same power and internals as the standard Galaxy S8, although it might only be available in China, at least for a limited time. A U.S. release date hasn't been announced, but it's quite possible that the phone will reach stateside, seeing as the film was released just late last month.
Samsung Galaxy S8 Specs
Since the Pirates of the Caribbean Edition is basically the same as a regular Galaxy S8, this means users will get a gorgeous 5.8-inch Infinity Display, a 12-megapixel camera on the back — one of the best cameras in smartphone photography there is, according to DxOMark — and fancy biometric features, such as the Iris and fingerprint scanners and a heart rate sensor.
Under the hood, the phone is even more impressive, packing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip, with plenty of memory and onboard storage, to boot. Unfortunately, the battery is where it falls short, just a tad bit low at 3,000 mAh, but not too horrible, to be clear. The phone is available in a number of colors, including Midnight Black, Orchid Gray, Arctic Silver, Coral Blue, and Maple Gold.
Finally, on the front of the phone is an 8-megapixel shooter with Auto HDR. The Galaxy S8 is also the first phone to support Bluetooth 5.0 technology, which features the ability to pair two Bluetooth headsets simultaneously. The phone also features wireless and fast battery charging, in addition to Samsung DeX support, which turns the phone into a desktop.
These specs make the Galaxy S8 one of the best smartphones this year, rivaling the LG G6 and forthcoming handsets including the OnePlus 5 and the iPhone 8.
