Instagram, arguably the most popular photo sharing platform in the world, has released a list of the most Instagrammed locations of 2013 and surprisingly, a mall in Thailand has topped the list.
The Bangkok mall Siam Paragon beat out other locations such as New York's famous Times Square and California's Disneyland as the most Instagrammed location in the world for 2013. While this may come as a surprise for some, it's not remotely surpsing for many Thai Instagram users. The fact that last year's number one most Instagrammed location was Thailand's Suvarnabhumi Airport, suggests that the Thai people really love using the photo sharing app.
So what's with Thai people and Instagram? Instagram has experienced a recent boost in Asian countries the past couple of years. The rising popularity of the app, coupled with the rise in the number of smartphone users in Thailand, means that thousands of photos are posted from the South East Asian country on a daily basis.
In fact, many of the country's top celebrities are avid users of the app. Popular Thai actresses such as Aum Patchrapa Chaichua, who has the most number of followers in Thailand, use the app often to posts photos. Chaichua has over 1.8 million followers on Instagram.
In addition to being the home of the most Instagrammed place on the planet, Bangkok also happens to be the second most Intragrammed city, beaten only by New York. Aside from being number one, New York is also home to the second most Instragrammed location, which happens to be Times Square.
Other runner ups in the Most Instagrammed cities list include Los Angeles, California; London, UK; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Moscow, Russia, Rio de Janiero, Brazil; San Diego, California; Las Vegas, Nevada, and San Fransisco, California.
According to Instagram, over 60 percent of Instagram users now share photos from outside the country and the number is expected to grow during the coming year.
