Charles Manson, the convicted 80-year-old mastermind behind one of the most notorious killing sprees in the 20th century, has received a marriage license.
Manson will be marrying 26-year-old Afton Elaine Burton, who goes by the name of Star and already considers herself as Manson's wife.
Sources told CNN about the couple's acquisition of a marriage license, though no date has yet been set for the wedding ceremony.
Burton has been communicating with Manson since she was 17 years old, after a friend showed her some of Manson's environmental writings. Using $2,000 which she saved up from her employment in a kitchen of retirement home, Burton moved in 2007 from Illinois to the city of Corcoran to be closer to Manson.
Manson is convicted at the Corcoran State Prison, where he has stayed for the previous 25 years. Burton talks to Manson daily through phone and goes to visit him during most weekends.
The couple will have 90 days to exercise the marriage license that they acquired; with California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesman Jeffrey Callison stating that the wedding date should fall on a visiting day.
The wedding of Manson and Burton will allow up to a maximum of 10 other guests, in addition to the officiant that they choose. Two additional guests from within the prison will also be allowed, Callison said.
Outside photography for the occasion will be prohibited.
However, even if the wedding pushes through, conjugal visits between Manson and Burton will not be allowed because Manson has been jailed with a life sentence. In addition, physical contact is severely limited between prisoners and visitors. When Burton visits Manson, they are only allowed to hug one another at the start and at the end of the visit.
Throughout the day, Burton does paintings and maintains several social media websites dedicated to Manson, including MansonDirect.com.
Burton has previously said that she is hoping to be able to get Manson free from his sentence, claiming that the convicted killer has no connection to seven murders that charged him as the mastermind. Included in the victims in Manson's killing spree was actress Sharon Tate.
Burton said that marrying Manson would allow her to access documents and information that are not allowed to be revealed to people outside Manson's family. Accessing such information would allow Burton to work on Manson's case, as she looks to prove his innocence.
"I'm completely with him, and he's completely with me. It's what I was born for, you know. I don't know what else to say," Burton said.
