Microsoft tapped Eurogamer's Digital Foundry, the harshest critic of the Xbox Project Scorpio, to reveal the impressive specifications of the upcoming video game console. However, something very important was missing from the unconventional unveiling of the Xbox Project Scorpio — the games.
The Xbox Project Scorpio has long been described as "the most powerful console ever built," with high-end specifications and native 4K support. However, if Microsoft wants to avoid similar criticism that Nintendo received for the launch titles of the Nintendo Switch, it will need to show off games that will impress customers.
Xbox Project Scorpio Specs Are Impressive
As expected, the specifications of the Xbox Project Scorpio are impressive, leading off with a 6-teraflop Polaris GPU that makes the console 4.5 times more powerful than the Xbox One and 1.4 times better than Sony's PlayStation Pro.
The Xbox Project Scorpio is also capable of playing games at native 4K UHD at 60 frames per second, and is powered by an octa-core 2.3 GHz CPU, 12 GB of GDDR5 RAM and a custom Jaguar-based processor. With that much power packed under its hood, the console was able to garner praise from Digital Foundry.
It was also reported that all Xbox One games will work with the Xbox Project Scorpio, but will look much better on the new console. Digital Foundry added that it saw a demonstration of Forza Motorsport 7 running on the Xbox Project Scorpio with remarkable performance.
Xbox Project Scorpio Games: Where Are They?
Microsoft has been trying to catch up with Sony in the video game industry, as the PlayStation 4 has been dominating the market over the Xbox One. However, Microsoft should take note that a more powerful video game console, on its own, will not be able to swing the tide in its favor.
Sony already boasts a formidable line-up of games for this year, with PlayStation 4 exclusives such as Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, Nier: Automata, and Gravity Rush 2, along with exclusive content for the first year of the upcoming Destiny 2. The Nintendo Switch, meanwhile, for all its shortcomings, is still doing very well due to how amazing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild is.
Microsoft, in comparison, does not have such a system-seller in the works, and despite the powerful specifications of the Xbox Project Scorpio, it remains unclear why developers would want to create a game exclusive for the console.
If Microsoft would want the Xbox Project Scorpio to reach great heights, it will need to make sure that the console will receive high-quality exclusives that will convince players to buy the expectedly expensive device. It was previously reported that in addition to Forza Motorsport 7, other titles that will be coming to the Xbox Project Scorpio include Red Dead Redemption 2, State of Decay 2, Crackdown 3, Star Wars: Battlefront 2, and the next Call of Duty, FIFA, and Madden games.
None of these games will beat titles such as Horizon Zero Dawn, and mainstays such as Halo and Gears of War are losing their steam. Microsoft will need to quickly drive up the hype for the Xbox Project Scorpio through games, or else it will still be losing the video game race to Sony despite offering "the most powerful console ever built."
