The Simpsons co-creator Sam Simon has been diagnosed with terminal cancer since 2012. He was only given a few months to live, but he managed to push through for another two years. As it stands now, Simon is planning to give away his $100 million fortune to charity when he passes on to the next life.
This is a significant gesture by the 59-year-old, as that $100 million could be used to make a difference. From what we've come to understand, Simon is donating all his riches to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Save the Children and Feeding Families.
There are folks who are not particularly happy with Simon giving away a portion of his money to PETA, since the organization, critics say, tends to exaggerate its cause to the point where many just see the whole thing as a joke.
However, we should bear in mind that Simon is at peace with himself right now, and if he prefers donating millions to PETA, then it is his right to do so. According to Simon, cancer is the most amazing experience of his life.
"Somehow I ended up surrounded by people that love me and care for me and will do anything for me. It's a good feeling. That's called happiness," he told Maria Shriver.
It is clear that the man has a deep love for animals, and would do anything to help and protect these creatures from violent human beings.
"A lot of it is selfish," says Simon, with a laugh. "I get to watch these animals that have been in concrete bunkers their whole life; I get to watch them take their first steps on grass, I get to fly my friends out."
"They're dependent on us for that and so I feel that it's my responsibility to speak for those who can't speak for themselves," he added.
