Facebook has announced a move that will give users more control over what shows up on their News Feed.
The announcement was made through the official Facebook newsroom through a post written by Greg Marra, a product manager for the social network.
Marra described the News Feed as the location where users are updated with what is happening with the user's friends and also where users look for and find content which matters to them.
According to Marra, the things users do in their respective News Feeds help Facebook in determining what each specific user wants to see. It is up to the users to decide which friends they want to connect to, which Pages to regularly get updates from, and which public figures to follow.
Facebook has released additional methods through which users can control what appears on their News Feed, along with more ways for users to provide feedback.
The settings for News Feed will begin to show a list of the friends, Pages and Groups that users have seen the most in their News Feed over each week. Users are given the option to sort the list by posts of friends, Pages or Groups, or be provided with an overall summary.
Users can now easily choose to unfollow friends, Pages or Groups so that certain posts will no longer be shown in the News Feed. They can also see who they have unfollowed and opt to re-follow with one tap.
Those who see certain content that they do not like or are uninterested in can hide them from their News Feed by tapping on the arrow located at the top right of the article or post.
Whenever a user chooses to hide content, the user is automatically given the option to see less posts from the friend, Page or Group.
Users who choose the option to see less are then followed up with the question of whether to unfollow the friend, Page or Group to prevent more content from them showing up.
As with others that have already previously been unfollowed, users can go into the settings for News Feed where all the unfollowed friends, Pages and Groups are listed to access the option to re-follow.
All these new options for the settings of News Feed are now available for both the desktop version and mobile app. The new feedback options for the News Feed are also now available for the desktop version, with the feature to be released for the mobile app over the next couple of weeks.
