If you remember the first Doom game that began the first person shooter craze, then you have had a very good childhood growing up. Many of us spent hours upon hours playing this legendary game over the years, and during this time, we took the pride boasting about our achievements to friends. However, time have passed by really fast, which means you might not have realized that Doom is now 20 years old.
Doom was launched way back on December 10, 1993 a time when Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez were still in diapers, Justin Bieber was not yet born, and X-Files was going through its first season.
The game followed in the footsteps of a space marine who battled demonic enemies on the planet Mars. Now, that Doom will look primitive compared to modern shooters such as Halo, Call of Duty or Battlefield; however, it was the most innovative game at the time and also went on to start a cultural phenomenon in the early 1990s.
Compared to modern games that are gigabytes in size, the first Doom was a mere 2MB file that spread quickly around the world after Texas-based id Software uploaded the game to an FTP website via the University of Washington's online network.
To this day, the original Doom and all the games in the franchise are still one of the most popular and most played games. The last addition to the franchise was Doom 3 back in 2004, which turned out to be a huge success. Up to this day, however, fans are still awaiting word on when they can play Doom 4.
The man behind the Doom franchise is id Software co-founder and programmer John Carmack. Carmack worked for the company for over 22 years, then chose recently to relieve his post by taking up a job at Oculus VR to help make popular the Oculus Rift VR head mount device.
No word on whether Carmack will ever return to the company he co-founded after completing his job at Oculus VR in the future to come. Hope Doom's not doomed.
