The zombies are taking a beating at the box office.
The video game and movie franchise Resident Evil: The Final Chapter lands at number 4 at the U.S. Box office weekend. It ranks behind thriller maestro M. Night Shymalan's Split (number 1), dog lover's treat A Dog's Purpose (number 2), and biopic Hidden Figures (number 3). Split has been on top for two weeks. Oscar-winner La La Land completes the top five.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is the sixth movie in the video game franchise Resident Evil. It is the last one for the storyline of Alice as played by series heroine Milla Jovovich.
Made For Global Audience
The movie earned $13.9 million in its opening week. Historically, the franchise performs better in the international scene. The Final Chapter has already bagged $64.5 million out of its $78.4 million most recent total. According to Josh Greenstein, Sony Worldwide Marketing and Distribution Chief, the opening week's earnings are in line with the studio's expectations. He agreed that the movie fares better abroad.
The film also aligned with the vision of Sony chief Tom Rothman, who took over the studio in 2015. Under him, the studio focused on films targeting the foreign audience. With the weekend earnings, the franchise's total has reached the 1-billion dollar mark, making it the highest earning video game-based movie of all time.
Return To Raccoon City
In the Final Chapter, Alice returns to where all the series began: Raccoon City. The film stars Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Eoin Macken, and William Levy. The film was directed by Paul Anderson. The movie is set in the infamous "The Hive", a top-secret hi-tech base. In the movie, evil mega-corporation Umbrella Corp. is planning to unleash yet another nightmare to the survivors of the apocalypse.
According to Anderson, the movie was planned to tie all the loose ends of the previous movies. "It's a return to the very beginning of the franchise, Raccoon City, or what's left of it after we dropped a bomb on it in the second film," he said. "It's a return to The Hive for Alice, where it all started, and this is where we find out the truth about [her]."
The movie series has no ties with the video game lore.
Another Resident Evil title, the video game Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, is currently out to positive reviews. The game is now out for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
