In its first appearance at the annual event, Xiaomi unveiled several products at CES 2017, one of which is the ultra-thin modular TV named the Mi TV 4.
CES 2017 is filled with eye-catching TVs, but the Xiaomi Mi TV 4 was able to stand out due to its unique design, both externally and internally.
Xiaomi Mi TV 4: Thinner Than The iPhone
The Mi TV 4, as described by Xiaomi VP International Hugo Barra during the company's presentation, is the thinnest TV yet, with a thickness of only 4.9 millimeters at its thinnest point. Barra claims that the Mi TV 4 practically disappears when viewed from the side, which is not an exaggeration at all despite the processing section taking up about less than a third of the display's back.
Xiaomi said that the Mi TV 4 is 30 percent thinner than the iPhone 7 and 37 percent thinner than its Mi Mix smartphone. It has no frames and almost no bezels, with a transparent stand and a metal back cover. It comes in three sizes: 49 inches, 55 inches, and 65 inches.
Xiaomi Mi TV 4 As A Modular TV
Xiaomi's Mi TV 4 is more than simply an ultra-thin TV, though, as it is essentially split into two components. The first one is the ultra-thin panel, and the second one is the bar located under the screen wherein all the TV's internal components are located. The two components are connected by a single cable.
The decision behind such a design for the Mi TV 4 is that with the internal components of the television separated, it will be much easier to install upgrades or make repairs. For example, Mi TV 4 owners will be able to swap out the display unit of the television for a better screen or provide a boost in the television's capabilities by replacing the motherboard with a more powerful one. Xiaomi noted that the motherboard, which is the component that users would want to upgrade most frequently, is only 20 percent of the cost of the television.
Other Xiaomi Mi TV 4 Details
The Mi TV 4 is powered by Xiaomi's Patch Wall, which is a software skin on top of the Android operating system that is capable of learning through the browsing history of users. The system then makes intelligent recommendations on content that the user might want to watch.
Also included with the Mi TV 4 is an independent home theater system that supports Dolby Atmos surround sound technology. Through the system, users will be able to hear sound in 3D, meaning that sounds will be heard from locations around the user instead of only coming from the direction of the television.
Xiaomi Mi TV 4 Price And Availability
Xiaomi has not revealed the exact price for the Mi TV 4, but Barra did say that the 65-inch model will be sold for a price that is well under $2,000, while a version without the Dolby Atmos system will be under $1,500. The 49-inch and 55-inch models will be cheaper than that, of course.
No specific release date was also mentioned for the Mi TV 4, only that it will be released in China within the year. There is currently no timetable on when the Mi TV 4 will be coming to the United States.
