CES 2017: Samsung Gear Wearables Get Enhanced Under Armour Fitness Apps

Samsung and Under Armour are teaming up to give customers an enhanced wearable device experience. Samsung chose the sports apparel company to incorporate fitness applications into its range of wearable devices.

Samsung And Under Armour

Samsung wearable devices will have access to fitness-focused apps using their gadgets with Under Armour on board. The partnership will give users enjoyable features such as nutrition tracking, workout tracking, digital training, and access to running apps. Samsung also revealed that some unique features will be introduced along with the applications.

"This collaboration brings together the very best of Samsung wearable technology with the unmatched sports performance of the Under Armour brand," said Younghee Lee, executive vice president of Global Marketing and Wearable Business, Mobile Communications at Samsung Electronics.

Under Armour will integrate four fitness apps into the Samsung Gear range including Gear Fit 2, Gear S2, and the latest Gear S3. Gear S3 is one of the latest wearable devices from Samsung launched in November last year.

This year, the Under Armour Fitness suite, which includes UA Record, Endemondo, MyFitnessPal, and MapMyRun will be available for the said Samsung devices expected to roll out in early 2017.

Although no exact date was revealed, reports say that the access to Under Armour fitness suite will depend on the device. Gear Fit 2 users can already download the applications including the unique features starting Jan. 4. Meanwhile, Endomondo – with the additional functions – is expected to be available before the month ends.

Fitness Venture

In 2015, Under Armour acquired the virtual fitness apps Endomondo and MyFitnessPal to add to its fitness suite. The company reportedly spent $560 million to buy both apps. With the acquisition of fitness apps and the partnership with Samsung, it appears that Under Armour is gearing toward a more advanced fitness venture aside from producing clothing and fitness gears.

"We're excited to work with one of the most recognized brands in the world to continue to bring value to our global digital community of more than 190 million users. Samsung is renowned for its innovative, stylish yet practical devices," Mike Lee, chief digital officer at Under Armour said.

Last year, Samsung introduced a ton of new supported apps including Spotify, to enhance the user experience of its wearable devices. Today, with the Under Armour fitness suite, users will not only enjoy the benefits of using the advanced Samsung wearable devices but they will also be able to meet their fitness goals using the supported applications in style.
