The NES Classic Edition headlines what has so far been a great year for old school gamers, with the hype surrounding the device causing massive supply shortages.
Nintendo, while struggling to keep up with the overwhelming demand for the NES Classic Edition, might already be looking forward to the next retro console that it will launch.
Nintendo Trademark Hints At SNES Classic Edition
A Twitter bot account that tracks trademark filings has caught one made by Nintendo that involves an image of the SNES controller.
While this could ultimately end up being nothing, the timing of the trademark filing could mean that Nintendo is already planning for the inevitable SNES Classic Edition.
The NES Classic Edition, as a retro gaming console, is basically a specially designed case with a basic board that is preloaded with NES games. If Nintendo would be using the same principle for the SNES Classic Edition, it would only have to create a new design for the case that looks like the SNES and re-program the basic board to instead operate an emulator for SNES games.
In addition, instead of the NES controller, Nintendo would have to package the SNES Classic Edition with an SNES controller, which could be the reason why the company has filed a trademark for the accessory.
When Will The SNES Classic Edition Be Released?
If the trademark filing for the SNES controller really does mean that Nintendo is already working on the SNES Classic Edition, retro gamers might have to wait before they can get their hands on the device.
Nintendo is still trying to manufacture enough units of the NES Classic Edition to address the frustrating supply shortage for the device, with no timeline in sight now that the promise of Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé to get the retro console into the hands of all interested gamers before Christmas is broken.
In addition, Nintendo will be focusing all of its marketing initiatives in early 2017 and beyond on the upcoming Nintendo Switch hybrid console.
If Nintendo will indeed launch an SNES Classic Edition, the most probable release date for the device would be before the holidays, similar to the time when the NES Classic Edition was launched. Hopefully Nintendo has learned its lesson from the supply shortage of the NES Classic Edition so that once it starts selling the SNES Classic Edition, there will be enough units to go around for all old school gamers.
