Xbox One Update Increases Download Speeds Up To 80 Percent Or 40 Percent For Users With Slower Connections

Microsoft has released the Xbox One 10.0.14393.2152 update that can allow up to 80 percent boost in download speed. The company claims that this new feature will cover all users although download speeds for those with slower connection could register approximately 40 percent increase.

The download performance depends the 100Mbps threshold. If your bandwidth falls within this speed or is faster, then you will enjoy the higher download rate. The 40 percent boost kicks in for speeds lower than this figure.

Of course, Microsoft stated that all these will also vary according to the internet connection configurations. In addition, download speed will also depend on whether a user is playing a game since the system will prioritize gameplay over download.

Xbox One Connection vs. PlayStation Network

The increased download rate cements Xbox One's advantage over its PlayStation rival. The console has consistently trounced download speeds in the PlayStation network and this is supported by an independent study released early this year. Researchers at IHS Markit found that Microsoft's network is generally more reliable than Sony especially in terms of connections during multiplayer gameplay.

Polygon cited how PlayStation users have resorted to workarounds such as how users of PS4 have taken to downloading games when the device is on rest mode. The latest PlayStation 4 update did not really address this area.

Xbox One Energy Consumption

Aside from the significantly reduced waiting period, the boost in download speed can also help users reduce their energy bills.

According to PC World, this is demonstrated in the energy-saving mode, an option that processes downloads and updates when the user manually turns the Xbox One on. Its power consumption is lower than the instant-on mode, which is largely on standby state. This alternative downloads games and updates without user intervention.

With faster download speeds, users are now more likely to use the energy-saving mode when downloading. The former uses 0.5 watts as opposed to the 15-watt consumption of the instant-on mode.

Other Features

Aside from the improved download speed, the latest update also upgrades the Xbox One wireless controllers' performance. Even the background music got a tweak particularly with the additional reliability and consistency for streaming music apps.

Microsoft has also bundled patches that should result in general stability and performance improvements. The official statement did not provide more specifics into these optimizations but it should fix some known bugs and problems.

To check whether your Xbox One already has the latest software, just head to the Settings menu. In All Settings, go to System and find the Console Info & Updates option, which should contain your Xbox OS info.
