Final Fantasy XV, a game 10 years in the making that has largely proven it was worth the wait and a road trip worth taking, still comes with certain flaws. Among these flaws are gaps in its story line, which is a particularly glaring problem due to the Final Fantasy franchise being known as a story-driven series.
In an unprecedented move, Square Enix revealed that it will be releasing free updates in the future to fill in the game's plot holes, along with other kinds of DLC that will improve the Final Fantasy XV experience.
Final Fantasy XV Free Updates
In a post on the official Square Enix blog, Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata reiterated that the release day of Final Fantasy XV did not end the developer's work on the game.
"We want you to enjoy Final Fantasy XV for a long time to come," Tabata wrote, adding that after listening to player feedback on improvements that can be made to the game, Square Enix is planning to release free updates over the course of 2017.
According to Tabata, the early plans of Square Enix involve enriching certain parts of the game, including strengthening ring magic and improving the gameplay for Final Fantasy XV's Chapter 13.
Chapter 13 has been criticized by gamers for being very linear and repetitive, which goes against the open-world characteristic of Final Fantasy XV. What Tabata means by saying that gameplay enhancement will be added to the chapter remains unclear, but it goes to show that Square Enix is listening to player feedback and acting upon them.
Final Fantasy XV Plot Patches
Tabata continued by saying that after the aforementioned updates, Square Enix will be looking to add scenes into Final Fantasy XV that will better explain parts of the story. Tabata mentioned explaining the motivation behind the actions of Ravus, the supposed brother-in-law of Noctis, as one aspect that Square Enix will focus on.
The developer would need some time before such plot patches are released, though, as they would need to be localized and then given voice-overs for the various languages that Final Fantasy XV was released for.
Other Final Fantasy XV Updates And DLC
Tabata added that Square Enix will look to make certain important characters in Final Fantasy XV playable, in addition to introducing customizable avatars. Other features that could soon be added to the game include carrying over stats from previous playthroughs, adding items that open up new playstyles and improving readability for some languages.
Square Enix is also looking at possibly adding real-time content to Final Fantasy XV, including new bosses that offer exclusive achievements and rewards and hunts that will only be available for a limited time.
In addition to the updates, Square Enix is also working on downloadable content. There are no official titles for the DLC yet, but the tentative names given to them are already enough to draw massive interest. The tentative names for the planned DLC for Final Fantasy XV are FFXV Holiday Pack, FFXV Booster Pack, FFXV Episode Gladiolus, FFXV Episode Ignis, FFXV Episode Prompto and FFXV Expansion Pack: Comrades.
All of the upcoming free updates and planned DLC for Final Fantasy XV would only further the success of the game, which has claimed the best start ever for any game in the RPG franchise.
