Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 developer Ryota Niitsuma recently said that there is nothing happening regarding the next game in the fighting franchise, Marvel Vs. Capcom 4.
Niitsuma, however, may have spoken too soon. According to sources, Marvel Vs. Capcom 4 is already in development, with a release date pegged for 2017.
Marvel Vs. Capcom 4 To Be Revealed At Sony's PSX
Multiple sources have told Polygon that Marvel Vs. Capcom 4 will be unveiled at the upcoming PlayStation Experience event of Sony, which will kick off on Dec. 3. This is another knock at what Niitsuma previously said, as the developer claimed that fans of the fighting game franchise should not expect Marvel Vs. Capcom 4 to be announced at PSX.
Gamers have long been waiting for Marvel Vs. Capcom 4, as the last game in the series, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, was launched five years ago for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The follow-up title, Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, was then released within that year.
What We Know So Far About Marvel Vs. Capcom 4
Sources claim that for the Marvel characters in the upcoming crossover fighting game, the fighters will be drawing from the ones that are heavily featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This would mean that gamers should expect The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy to appear in Marvel Vs. Capcom 4.
However, X-Men characters are expected to be pulled out of the game, which would be a major change to the lineup of fighters in the franchise. X-Men characters have long been a part of the franchise, with fan favorites Wolverine, Magneto, Storm and Phoenix among the ones that are playable in Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3.
A teaser poster for Marvel Vs. Capcom 4 was also said to have been discovered over the weekend, featuring a stylized number 4 and the logos of Marvel, Capcom and the PlayStation 4. It was accompanied by a NeoGAF user claiming that the game would be unveiled at Sony's PSX, a rumor that has now been affirmed by Polygon's sources.
Other Marvel Video Games
Other Marvel video games in the pipeline include one based on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise by Telltale Games, which has been successful with its games for The Walking Dead.
At E3 2016 earlier in the year, superhero games made a great showing, with one of the titles generating excitement being a PlayStation 4 exclusive Spider-Man title by Insomniac Games.
