LG G3 Screen becomes official, sports in-house octa-core NUCLUN chip

The LG G3 Screen smartphone, designed to cater exclusively to the Korean market, is scheduled to debut in the country this week. It is powered by LG's proprietary chipset NUCLUN Octa-core processor.

NUCLUN is based on the ARM big.LITTLE architecture. It houses four 1.2GHz cores for regular processing and four 1.5GHz cores that are used for advanced performance. The big.LITTLE technology has the capacity to extend the device's battery life without compromising processing power. It has the needed technology that delivers efficient multi-tasking capabilities.

"NUCLUN opens up a new chapter in LG's history of innovation in the mobile industry," said Dr. Jong-Seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics. "With this in-house solution, we will be able to achieve better vertical integration and further diversify our product strategy against stronger competition. NUCLUN will give us greater flexibility in our mobile strategy going forward."

The LG G3 Screen is built with full HD IPS display of 5.9 inches with 1080 x 1920 pixels. Apart from the NUCLUN processor, the device is also powered by 2 GB of RAM. It features Android 4.4 KitKat OS and a built-in storage size of 32 GB, which can be expanded. Details of the allowable maximum storage are yet to be determined.

The smartphone is built with a front camera of 2.1 MP and a rear camera, which has OIS+ and LED flash, of 13 MP. The device is powered by a removable battery of 3000mAh. The phone has dimensions of 157.8 x 81.8 x 9.5mm, weighs 182 grams, and is available in black and white.

The G3 Screen also supports LTE-A Cat.6 network and has the capacity to deliver a maximum download speed of up to 225Mbps. It is compatible with existing LTE networks.

Similar with the older siblings of the G3 Screen, the device also has UX-derived features such as the QuickMemo+, Knock Code, Touch and Shoot and Gesture Shot.

The phone is said to retail at 803,000 won (US$757). A spokesman from LG said that the company is undecided if they are bringing the phone to international markets.

Sources say the device will be the last model in the G3 lineup and that LG is unsure if they will continue to feature the NUCLUN series in 2015. There is also the option to come up with a flagship model powered by the chip.
