Sony has quietly started pushing the November Android security update to its Xperia XZ and Xperia X Compact, ensuring the smartphones are up to date in terms of security.
In this day and age when mobile use is on the rise and smartphones have pretty much become ubiquitous, it's paramount that user data is protected and devices remain secure.
After the whole Stagefright scare affecting millions of Android devices back in 2015, Google decided to release monthly security patches to keep its operating system as secure as it can be. There was still a Quadrooter vulnerability that threatened 900 million Android devices running Qualcomm chips, but overall monthly Android security updates should ensure that devices are out of harm's way.
BlackBerry and Samsung were among the very first OEMs to push out the November security patch to their devices, even before Google released the update for its own Pixel and Nexus handsets. The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge on T-Mobile, for instance, got the patch on Nov. 5, while Google rolled the November security update to the Pixel and Nexus devices running Android 7.1 Nougat several days later.
Sony Xperia November Security Patch
Sony is not wasting any time, running just a little behind Samsung, BlackBerry and Google. The company has quietly started rolling out the latest security update to its Xperia XZ and Xperia X Compact.
The update for the Sony Xperia XZ carries build number 39.0.A.3.30, as the reliable Xperia Blog reports, while the patch for the Xperia X Compact carries build number 34.1.A.3.49, according to Phone Arena.
No Changelog Yet
Sony has yet to make any official announcement regarding these two updates that are rolling out now, so it remains unclear at this point whether they include other fixes or improvements for the Xperia X Compact or Xperia XZ beyond the Android security patches from Google.
Some users have been experiencing some issues with the responsiveness of the double tap to wake feature, but it's unknown at this point whether Sony resolved the problems with this patch. It's possible that this update only includes the security updates from Google and a subsequent patch from Sony will address other matters pertaining to Xperia devices.
OTA Rollout
Lastly, Sony is pushing the updates over-the-air (OTA), which means that it may take a while for all Xperia XZ and Xperia X Compact users to receive them. OTA updates always roll out gradually and not all users get them at the same time. Nevertheless, the updates have started rolling out and you can always check for their availability from your smartphone's Settings menu.
