Some WhatsApp users should now have access to two-factor authentication if their apps have been updated to version 2.16.341 and above. Reports indicate that this mainly includes beta builds for Android and Windows with no official confirmation of a public release.
WhatsApp Two-Step Authentication
WhatsApp beta users can access the new feature by going to their account settings. The two-step authentication option should be included with other menu items such as Privacy, Security and the option to Delete the WhatsApp account.
Tapping the new authentication mechanism will open a window with an Enable button along with a reminder that the two-step verification will require a passcode when registering a phone. Users will also need to add an email account to be used when resetting the six-digit code.
Once the registration process is completed, no one will be able to use your number to register a new WhatsApp account without the passcode or the email account to reset it.
The process is a bit roundabout but it should appeal to users who are concerned about security. The feature provides ample defense against tools that could enable hackers to take over their devices.
Audio Playback In The Background
WhatsApp's latest beta build also includes a new feature that allows audio messages to get played in the background. This means that you can go to another conversation window or even use another app and the audio playback will go on unless it is stopped or the 3-4-minute message ends.
The current public version will cut that message when switching to other conversations or when opening a new app. This feature is already being offered by rival messaging platforms. Viber even allows audio calling to continue in the background while the user is free to use other apps or use other chat windows.
Beta Features
It is unfortunate that some WhatsApp features that showed up in previous beta builds have been omitted. For example, there is the ability to stream a video message, allowing a user to view it without downloading the file locally. This casts a cloud over the two-factor authentication feature. While it will likely roll out in future stable versions, it could still get booted out.
If you are interested in downloading the latest WhatsApp beta build, you can just head to the Google Play Store. However, this is only available to those who are registered members of the official WhatsApp beta program. Fortunately, an APK file has now been uploaded online and this should work for everyone.
