It's rare to have pro wrestling and poetry mentioned in the same sentence, but here we are. A new commercial for WWE 2K15 explores the "thought provoking" side of wrestling by delivering a moody trailer featuring John Cena, Hulk Hogan and more.
Footage of brooding wrestlers makes up the majority of the trailer, as opposed to in-game footage and flashy entrances. As Cena recites lines of poetry, the trailer cuts to various wrestlers looking off into the distance, no doubt thinking about their historic wrestling past and itching to get back in the ring. Watch it below.
The poem heard throughout the trailer is "Do not go gentle into that good night," by Dylan Thomas. If the poem sounds familiar, that's because it recently got some free publicity courtesy of Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. In the trailer for that film, Michael Caine's character recites the same poem as a means to remark on humanity's struggle on a dying planet, and how interstellar space travel may be the only way to save Earth.
It's an interesting choice to accompany a trailer for pro wrestling, but it somehow works. Most of the wrestlers, especially Hogan, are past their prime. The poem is in many ways about old age and fighting against the inevitability of death. Grim stuff, but it does make for a captivating trailer.
WWE 2K15 release Oct. 28 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 version of the game landing on store shelves Nov. 18. You can check out a behind-the-scenes videos about the making of the game here and here.
