Fans have long wondered when Rockstar may reveal the next entry in its Red Dead franchise, and at long last it appears like the time has come. Two teaser images have been released by Rockstar in recent days, with one simply being the Rockstar logo on top of a blood-red background.
The second teaser image, however, holds far more. It's an image of seven silhouettes walking toward the viewer, the sun setting in the background behind them. The characters are clearly gunslinger or outlaw types, as each can be seen brandishing a weapon.
Which begs the question: who are these characters? Some fans already have theories. For a while now rumors have swirled that Rockstar's sequel to Red Dead Redemption would actually be a prequel. This new teaser image may give more weight to that idea, as one of the silhouettes looks awfully similar to that of Bill Williamson, a former member of Dutch's Gang and brother-in-arms of Red Dead Redemption protagonist John Marston.
Red Dead Redemption sees John hunting down the surviving members of Dutch's gang as part of a deal with the U.S. government to clean up the west. Williamson is among the first leaders John hunts down and serves as the main antagonist for a significant portion of the game.
If one of the characters in the image is indeed Bill Williamson, then might the image actually be that of Dutch's Gang at the height of its power? That would make perfect sense if this new Red Dead is in fact a prequel, and if so, it seems likely that Marston will once again take center stage.
Other members of Dutch's Gang include Javier Escuella and, of course, Dutch van der Linde himself. As for the remaining characters in the image, it's likely that there were others gang members not previously mentioned in Red Dead Redemption, which gives Rockstar plenty of room to create new characters.
Rockstar is clearly building towars some grand reveal, one that will likely end in a teaser trailer. As for when that will arrive is anybody's guess, but Rockstar definitely has the attention of the gaming world at the moment. We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
In other Red Dead news, the first game in the series, the PlayStation 2 classic Red Dead Revolver, recently became available on PlayStation 4. You can read more about that here.
