Netflix is the overwhelming choice among video streaming services for teens, as revealed in the results of a survey carried out by investment bank Piper Jaffray.
The Taking Stock With Teens survey by Piper Jaffray is a semiannual project that gathers input from about 10,000 teens across high schools in the United States with an average age of 16 years old. The data points that that survey attempts to collect the spending patterns, fashion trends and preferences in brands and media among teenagers.
One of the most significant results of the survey for the second half of 2016 reveals the dominance of Netflix among competitors Hulu and Amazon Prime Video in the teens' market, with 37 percent of teens found to watch Netflix daily.
In comparison, for Hulu and Amazon Prime Video, the figure is only found to be at 3 percent, which means that Netflix is about 12 times more popular among teens compared to rival video streaming services.
Second in the overall chart for the Teen Daily Video Consumption data point is video sharing website YouTube, with 26 percent of teens watching it every day, followed by cable TV at third at 25 percent. Other streaming services followed at a collective 6 percent, followed by Hulu and Amazon Prime.
It should also be noted that YouTube is in an upward trend while cable TV is in a downward trend, with YouTube finally leapfrogging cable TV for second place this half.
The survey does not go into specifics on why Netflix is surging in popularity compared to its competitors, but a thread on Reddit regarding the survey results reveals the reasons.
One of the major advantages that Netflix has over its competitors is the presence of profiles and kids mode, according to Redditor cd83. In addition, the interface of Amazon Prime Video is comparatively very hard to navigate compared to Netflix.
The absence of advertisements on Netflix is cited as one of the reasons why so many people are using the service, according to the Reddit comments. In addition, the video streaming service is easy to access on many different devices.
And, of course, the "Netflix and chill" largely boosted the video streaming service's popularity.
There are rumors that Netflix will soon introduce offline viewing capabilities, which is a feature that would make it even more attractive. Through the feature, users will be able to download content and then watch it at a later time.
Also, Netflix subscribers won't have to wait long, as it is said that the feature will be rolled out within two months.
