One of the great things about Battlefield 1 is how it provides players the opportunity to try out all the strange weaponry created and used during the first World War. From experimental tanks to the first machine guns, World War I was in many ways a war of firsts.
Battlefield 1 will be no different, seeking to include many of the weapons that made the conflict unique. Much to the amusement of gamers everywhere, that goal just so happens to mean that the micro-sized Kolibri pistol, one of the smallest firearms in history, will be included in Battlefield 1 when it launches later this month.
The weapon, patented in 1910 and manufactured in 1914, was marketed as a self-defense firearm - despite the fact that the weapon fires comically small 2.7 mm rounds and was said to barely be capable of penetrating an inch of pine board. There's no telling how many of the weapons actually saw use in World War I, but we're going to guess not many.
Not that that's stopping DICE from including the weapon as a fun gag for players. As one might expect, the video game version of the Kolibri seen in Battlefield 1 is hardly deadly. Footage of the weapon in action on Reddit shows YouTuber jackfrags shooting an enemy combatant at least eight times with the weapon and failing to kill him, with another player stepping in to finish the job.
With that in mind, it seems the Kolibri is definitely more of a joke weapon than an actual tool of destruction, and likely will be used as a means of humiliating opponents more than anything else. You can see the weapon in action below, in all its micro-sized glory.
As for how players actually unlock the Kolibri? That's still a mystery, though one that might not stay that way for much longer. Those with EA Access subscriptions on Xbox One can download and play the game for up to 10 hours starting today, with the full game becoming available for purchase on Oct. 21. Players who spend the extra cash to purchase the game's Early Enlister Deluxe Edition can begin playing a few days early on Oct. 18.
