It's one of the most embarrassing things that could happen on a date. You take your significant other out for a romantic night for some fine wining and dining, only to be humiliated when your credit card is declined. While this could happen to any American, the President says he is no different.
President Obama took the first lady out to the fancy downtown Manhattan restaurant Estela last month when he says his credit card was embarrassingly declined.
Before we assume that the President is broke, he told the story to workers at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in Washington on Friday, saying that the card was declined for suspicion of identity theft.
"I guess I don't use it enough, so they thought there was some fraud going on," Obama said. "Luckily, Michelle had hers. I was trying to explain to the waitress that I've really been paying my bills."
The President shared the story during his speech that included his plan to increase security for government credit cards, and debit cards that transfer federal benefits to millions of Americans. He signed an executive order on Friday to protect the approximate 100 million Americans who have suffered from security breaches related to identity theft and credit card fraud.
The couple enjoyed burrata with salsa verde and charred bread, an endive salad that included walnuts and anchovies, and croquettes before returning to their hotel around 10:30 p.m. The Obamas stopped at the New York restaurant during their stay in the city for the annual United Nations General Assembly last month.
Luckily, the first lady saved her husband from having to wash dishes, taking out her credit card to cover the cost.
