Android has turned 8 and to celebrate the milestone, Google took to the official Android Twitter account to tease a cryptic message.
On Friday, Sept. 23, the tweet shared by the Android Twitter account shows off the Android mascot, Bugdroid, holding a bowl of eggs and whisk in hand. The mascot is surrounded by nougat pieces, marshmallows and KitKat bars. The tweet hints that "something sweet" is on the cards.
Android 1.0 SDK launched in 2008 on Sept. 23, which makes the tweet date Android's 8th birthday. However, it seems Google is saving the celebrations for the weekend so that more people can engage.
The mysterious message from Google does not give anything away into what it has planned to mark the occasion. The teaser only gives a reference to the multiple versions of Android — deduce what you will from it.
Possibly, Google has some random giveaways planned or it could possibly be a clever marketing tactic knowing the company's love for all things gimmicky and attention-grabbing. The company is anticipated to take the wraps off the much-awaited and rumored Pixel XL and Pixel smartphones on Oct. 4 at an event in San Francisco, California, and the present teaser could be a way of garnering more attention.
It's also possible that we could take a peek into the high-profile devices in a promo video on Saturday, Sept. 24. Perhaps that is the "something sweet" being hinted at by the company. However, we are guessing that the buildup could be for a tribute video tracing Android's journey as the operating system turns 8. People have their own theories about what the surprise could be and here are some:
"Update all android phones in the planet at the same time?" tweeted a user.
"Make it easy for us to install latest Android version so we don't need to wait for companies to give us update. As apple do," requested a user.
"Fast apps that lets you run any app on any flavour of Android," said a user.
With a few more hours to go before the mystery is revealed, we will keep our eyes peeled on Android's official Twitter account to learn what surprises it has in store. Are you excited for what Android is whipping up?
Update: It seems Android was making a mountain out of a mole hill as the "something sweet" in store simply alluded to the picture of a birthday cake as the OS turned 8 years. Here's the tweet shared by Android — which undoubtedly dashed the hopes of many!
