'Bayonetta 2' review roundup: Perfect sequel to a great game?

Nintendo and Platinum Games have collaborated in the making of Bayonetta 2 which is a sequel to the character-action game Bayonetta that was released in 2009 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The lead character is Bayonetta who is described as a lanky-yet-curvy witch. Her mission is to rescue her friend who was sent off to hell and was doomed to stay there for eternity. As she gets closer to her destination, she has to fight off a bunch of demons and angels along the way.

Fans of the successful series will recognize the gameplay right away which only proves that the game's formula has worked once again. As Bayonetta fights against the characters from heaven and hell, the game pits itself against the elements of time and relevance.

"Bayonetta 2's combat is so expertly constructed, and its presentation so joyously insane, that you'd have to try so very hard to get bored of it all. In a year filled with the promise of ever more elaborate experiences on all the shiny new hardware, that Bayonetta 2 - a homage to classic game design and escapism - should be the most fun I've had playing a game all year is unexpected," wrote Gamespot which scored the game as a perfect 10 over 10.

Bayonetta 2 has a stylish art design that is noticeably highlighted when the game made its way to the Wii U platform. Platinum Games made sure that the game runs as smoothly as possible at all times. A combat slowdown is relatively rare and the soundtrack is equally excellent.

"Bayonetta 2 is the perfect action game. It oozes style and boasts gameplay that's both refined and lacking in excess," said Joystiq, which scored the game with 5 over 5.

While some locations in the sequel look familiar, the most noticeable difference is the heroine's new haircut. There's also a new set of animations that displays Bayonetta's impressive attack patterns with a generous amount of colors that adds to the game's graphic appeal.

Venture Beat, which described Bayonetta 2 as a good and surprising game, scored it at 87 over 100. Likewise, Polygon used a review scale and rated the game with a score of 7.5. According to its review scale: "Sevens are good games that may even have some great parts, but they also have some big 'buts.'"

Released in Japan on Sept. 20 of the year, the highly-admired Bayonetta 2 is due for a global release on the Oct. 24. With a new multiplayer gaming mode, Bayonetta 2 will be exclusively available to the Wii U game console.
