Apple Music is about to know its users a bit more personally.
The music streaming service just launched new personalized playlists for users who have beta access to iOS 10 and macOS Sierra.
The new Apple Music feature for these select users comes just one day before Apple's highly-anticipated press event on Wednesday, Sept. 7 that will feature the unveiling of the iPhone 7.
While the release date for iOS 10 will be announced at the iPhone 7 launch event (which is expected to be on Wednesday, Sept. 14), those lucky enough to test the software can now start playing around with the new additions to Apple Music.
These include two personalized playlists that work similarly to Apple Music's competitor Spotify's popular Discovery Weekly playlist: "My New Music Mix" and "My Favorite Mix."
Originally called "Discovery Mix" when it was announced at the WWDC conference in June, Apple Music's "My New Music Mix" is a playlist that consists of 25 different songs that are chosen based on the user's listening history.
This playlist is updated every Friday with new tracks to keep things fresh with the best new music from artists that are relevant to that user based on the types of artists and songs they like and frequently listen to. Think of it as a way to be exposed to new artists that fall into the wheelhouse of what the user already jams to.
Then again, Spotify users have had this feature for quite some time now, so there's nothing groundbreaking here. However, Spotfy's "Discovery Weekly" updates every Monday.
The "My New Music Mix" can be accessed in the "For You" section of the music streaming app.
The second new personalized playlist, "My Favorite Mix," consists of tracks that the user likes as well as songs that are similar to them. Think of this playlist as a blend of the current favorite songs of the user along with brand new songs that will be their latest obsession.
This playlist can also be found in the "For You" section.
To determine what songs to add to both lists, Apple Music will rely on its algorithm. It remains unseen how this algorithm will compare to Spotify's.
Spotify also recently expanded Discovery Weekly feature to include "Release Radar," a personalized playlists that includes only new music that was just released so that users hear the next big thing first.
Beta testers can check out the new playlists on Apple Music for iOS 10, macOS and iTunes 12.5.
