Twitter recently brimmed with excitement as Apple's account started to show signs of activity after years of staying in hibernation.
As the company is gearing up for the huge event where the Apple iPhone 7and Apple iPhone 7 Plus will be unveiled, a Twitter account with the handle @Apple was finally activated.
Keep in mind that although the handle was registered as far back as 2011, it has stayed dormant until now. At the time of writing, Apple's Twitter account has banked a bit more than 159,000 followers.
That might seem strange for the biggest global company by market value. However, the simple and unadorned truth is that Apple created the dormant "egg" and left it to incubate for as long as it needed. That time is now, apparently, and the company loaded both a profile picture and a background image for @Apple.
As a matter of fact, the account has not been used for tweeting, keeping quiet even now. A notable aspect is that the account now features a profile picture in the form of the Apple logo.
Everyone expects to see the number of followers surge as we get closer to Sept. 7.
Mark Gurman from Bloomberg tweeted on Sept. 2, pointing out that Apple will most likely put the account to good use for live-tweeting its iPhone 7 launch event in San Francisco.
Multiple rumors are hinting that Apple will release more than its latest smartphone at the event, and fans of the brand just might see the second-generation Apple Watch and a freshly baked MacBook.
It makes a lot of sense for Apple to use its dedicated Twitter account to promote its devices.
At the moment, the company communicates via Twitter using alternative handles such as @iTunes, @iBooks and @iTunesMovies. Other sources you can follow to stay tuned to Apple's developments are @pschiller (Apple marketing leader Phil Schiller) and @stevewoz (Apple's co-founder, Steve Wozniak).
Aside from showing activity on its @Apple account, the company opened and used two other Twitter accounts earlier this year. Apple Support is the first of the two (@AppleSupport), while the second is Apple News (@AppleNews). The former addresses (you guessed it) technical issues, while the latter is there to lobby news stories that are about to show up on the iOS app.
