T-Mobile has officially shared a list of HTC and Samsung devices set to get a taste of the latest Android 7.0 Nougat in the future.
Android 7.0 Nougat has rolled out earlier this week to select Nexus devices made by Google in collaboration with other OEMs, and the Nexus family is typically the first in line to get the latest OS. Non-Nexus devices, however, usually have to wait for at least a few months before getting the treat.
Carrier versions of non-Nexus smartphones have to wait even longer, as the update has to go through thorough testing before being pushed out. Nevertheless, T-Mobile wants customers to know that a number of smartphones on its network will be getting the Nougat update in the future.
The list currently covers seven smartphones from Samsung and two handsets from HTC. T-Mobile breaks down the upgrade process into three stages: Manufacturer Development, T-Mobile Testing and Completed.
The list of devices set to get Android 7.0 Nougat at some point in the future includes the Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, and the latest Samsung Galaxy Note 7. In the HTC camp, the One M9 and the HTC 10 will be getting the treat.
All of these smartphones are listed in the Manufacturer Development stage, which is the very first stage of the process. This means that it will take a while before the update is ready for Carrier Testing and eventually moves to Completed, and T-Mobile offers no specific time frame for when Nougat will actually be ready to hit these phones.
The Manufacturer Development stage basically means that T-Mobile and the OEM — in this case Samsung and HTC — have agreed to deploy the update to the aforementioned devices, but they have yet to start conducting tests and see how the software fares. As with any update, thorough testing is necessary to ensure potential issues are resolved before the update rolls out.
This list is not final, as T-Mobile will surely add more devices soon. The LG G5 and LG V10, for instance, will certainly get an update to Android 7.0 Nougat as well.
HTC previously announced that its HTC 10 should get the update to Android Nougat in the fourth quarter of this year, which would translate to sometime between October and December. The One M9 should follow after that, HTC added.
It remains to be seen just when exactly Android 7.0 Nougat will reach the select HTC and Samsung devices on T-Mobile's list, but we'll let you know as soon as we find out.
