This Is How Last-Gen 'Destiny' Players Can Upgrade To 'Rise Of Iron' At A Discount

Support for the last-generation versions of Destiny is, at long last, coming to an end.

The game's new expansion, Rise of Iron, won't release for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game. That leaves hardcore players on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with one of two choices: upgrade or not upgrade?

Upgrading, of course, doesn't come cheap. Though characters transfer from the last-gen versions of Destiny to the current-gen versions in the same console family, the game itself (and all of the expansions) don't. That means players must repurchase Destiny and the expansions alongside a brand new console if they want to continue their journey.

Thankfully, Bungie is offering a discount for last-gen Destiny players willing to make the jump for Rise of Iron. Destiny: The Collection is a new $59.99, digital-only version of Destiny for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 that will release alongside Rise of Iron in September. It includes all of the game's expansions, including Rise of Iron, all for one price.

Those who own Destiny: The Taken King on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, however, will be able to purchase Destiny: The Collection for a discounted $39.99 price, which is $10 more than Rise of Iron by itself. The deal is valid from now until Jan. 31, 2017, giving players a five-month window to upgrade for the discounted price. Those who pre-purchase Destiny: The Collection will be able to play all of the game's content (minus Rise of Iron) immediately. That gives players upgrading the chance to pick up right where they left off without having to wait until September.

It's not a huge discount, mind you. Players upgrading still have to spend hundreds of dollars on a new console and spend another $40 on mostly content they've already bought and played. However, at least Bungie is offering something rather than nothing, though it remains to be seen how many players might take advantage of the deal.

Of course, players can still continue playing on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but Bungie won't be supporting the consoles in future updates. There's also no chance that Destiny 2, which is rumored to be coming next year, will release for last-gen systems.

Destiny: The Collection is currently available for pre-purchase on the Xbox and PlayStation digital stores. Rise of Iron arrives Sept. 20. You can read more about Rise of Iron here.
