Action camera manufacturer GoPro is preparing for the holidays by leaving a larger set of footprints in Best Buy stores -- in 500 of the electronics retailer's locations, to be exact.
The newly unveiled 4k, Hero4 camera will be the star of the show in each of the GoPro 6-foot-tall displays at Best Buy locations. The Hero4 will be accompanied by other GoPro products, culminating in a merchandising campaign that triples GoPro's previous presence in Best Buy stores.
"Best Buy is the destination for the best in digital imaging technology, and GoPro's new line of cameras delivers just that for our customers," said Marie Grable, merchant director of digital imaging at Best Buy. "This unique new display, featuring the entire lineup of cameras and accessories, is a must-see for consumers who are looking to get their hands on the latest from GoPro."
The GoPro displays will feature large monitors to lure passers-by to dream up ways to implement the action cameras into their weekends or the lives of their pets. The monitors will showcase user-captured content, curated by GoPro and original video from the action camera maker.
Other retailers have offered GoPro products in stores, but the roughly four-year relationship with Best Buy appears to be going well enough for them to bet big on the electronics retailer's ability to move the action cameras from stores to gift boxes.
"This expansion will provide GoPro with a significant increase in shelf space from one of our biggest retail partners in North America," said Jonathan Harris, GoPro senior vice president of intergalactic sales. "We're excited to offer our customers a more compelling experience at most Best Buy locations each time they interact with our products in the store."
GoPro's popularity has soared as the company's cameras, initially created for athletes, have found a home in just about every facet of life. The action camera may have drawn the attention of other hardware manufacturers, if reports of HTC's ambition's prove true.
HTC is rumored to be preparing to unveil an action camera at its Double Exposure event on Oct. 8 in New York. The focus on photography on the invites and the event's very name adds weight to reports indicating the Taiwanese tech company will unveil a new selfie-centric smartphone, along with claims from anonymous sources asserting that HTC was exploring a new avenue to expand its hardware offerings.
HTC's rumored action camera was described as a rugged, waterproof device that was fitted with a wide-angle lens and capable of capturing video with 16-MP resolution.
