Final Boss Fight Comes First In JRPG ‘The Longest Five Minutes’

Video games typically progress in intensity, leaving the boss at the end for the final fight. For The Longest Five Minutes, however, it's the reverse.

Published by NIS America, The Longest Five Minutes flips the usual flow of a role-playing game on its head and starts its story with the final boss staring down the game's hero, who for some reason has forgotten everything, including what he's doing in a fight in the first place.

It's literally a mind trip, as players go on an adventure inside the hero's mind to relive the journey he's taken so far and to piece together his memories while duking it out with the final boss.

Due for a release in 2017, The Longest Five Minutes is set to come out for the PlayStation Vita and PC.

Although a different take, The Longest Five Minutes isn't NIS America's first tango with a story line that pits the hero against the big bad boss right off the bat. According to some, the game is reminiscent of Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger VS Darkdeath Evilman, where the silent Main Character is forced to face the villain Darkdeath Evilman as the duties of the Absolute Victory Unlosing Ranger were passed to him.

Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger VS Darkdeath Evilman was released in 2010 for the PlayStation Portable.

Aside from The Longest Five Minutes, upcoming games from NIS America include Criminal Girls 2: Party Favors (PS Vita), PSYCHO-PASS: Mandatory Happiness (PS Vita, PlayStation 4 and PC), Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet (PS4) and Yomawari: Night Alone (PS Vita and PC).
