Sony may have made a few missteps when it came to its online features in the past, but one thing that has been a sure-fire hit is the PlayStation Plus service. In exchange for a monthly subscription, players have access to more content and free games every month than any other service. It's been so successful that Microsoft even mirrored the program with the 'Games with Gold' promotion.
October is just like any other month, and Sony is offering up quite a bit of new content for all of its consoles. Playstation 4 users are getting the most out of PS Plus this month, but that doesn't mean Sony is leaving the Playstation 3 out in the cold, either.
To celebrate the release of the oft-delayed DriveClub, Sony is offering members a chance to play a pretty huge chunk of the final game for free. 10 cars and 11 tracks will be available for play with no purchase whatsoever, and while it's only a piece of what the full game will offer, it's still a sizable bit of content.
On top of that, PS4 users will also be able to download Dust: An Elysian Tail and Spelunky. This will be the first time Dust will appear on a Sony platform, and considering how well the game was received, it's a pretty huge bonus to be able to play the game for free. On the other hand, Spelunky has had a long history with the Playstation 3, though this is the first time it will be available on next-generation hardware. The game has become an indie darling, though its extreme difficulty certainly doesn't cater to everyone.
For Playstation 3 owners, Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara and Batman: Arkham Asylum will both be available on the service. The former is a compilation of two classic Dungeons & Dragons arcade titles, while the latter is easily one of the greatest action games in the history of the industry.
Finally, Playstation Vita owners will gain access to the arcade title Pix the Cat and Rainbow Moon. For fans of RPGs or turn-based tactics, Rainbow Moon is the obvious choice. For fans of utter and absolute insanity, Pix the Cat should do nicely.
If there's one thing that's off about Sony's offerings for October, it's that there's a surprising lack of horror games. It's October, Halloween is fast approaching; one would think that Sony would gift its fans with something to get them in the spirit for bad horror flicks and trick-or-treating.
Either way, the deals for October are fantastic, even when compared to previous months. Most of the games available are Cross Buy compatible, meaning that one purchase grabs the game for all of Sony's consoles...and they're free!
Sony's new Playstation Plus deals will begin on Oct. 8.
