Beverly Carter, a 49-year-old realtor who had been missing since Sept. 25, was found dead in a shallow grave.
Carter was last seen showing a home in Scott, Arkansas. After she did not return home that evening, her husband Carl began a search for the woman, whose body was found buried on the grounds of the Argos Concrete Company. The makeshift grave, located off Route 5 in Cabot, Arkansas, was roughly 20 miles away from the house where she was last seen alive.
"Jesus wrapped his arms around Beverly and took her home. To #RememberBeverly, please share stories of her love and spirit on this page. #WeWearRed because we love her. #WeWearRed because her spirit can never be broken. #WeWearRed because Beverly touched our lives and we're better for it," supporters of the "Find Beverly" Facebook page announced on learning of her death.
The suspect identified as Aaron Lewis, 33, was arrested in Little Rock, Arkansas on Sept. 29, after being involved in an automobile crash the day before. The suspect was brought to an area hospital, but escaped from his room, while guards stood outside his door. He was apprehended after fleeing the hospital.
Lewis denied killing the realtor, blaming a mysterious man he called Trevor. Carl Minden, a spokesman for the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office, told television station KARK, that police questioned "Trevor," and he was not a suspect in the case.
"We are not seeking any other suspects. [The case] did not end as we hoped," Sheriff Doc Holladay said.
When a reporter asked Lewis why Beverly was singled out for killing, Lewis responded "because she was just a woman that worked alone, a rich broker."
Larry Jegley, prosecutor for Pulaski County, said that such events "leave scars" on a community. He promised the public that his team would "cross the finish line" in prosecuting Lewis for the killing.
Gayle Cranford of Little Rock told the press she encountered Lewis in 2013, when he approached her about buying a house. The suspect told Cranford he was looking to pay cash for a house, and he purchased the home of her son. The potential client whom Carter met the last time she was seen was also looking to pay with cash.
Law enforcement agencies spent 1,200 employee hours attempting to locate the missing woman.
Lewis was charged with capital murder, kidnapping and four counts of illegal gun possession on Sept. 30. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
