For fans of the 1979 cult classic film The Warriors, today just got a whole lot better.
The news is twofold: first, the Russo brothers (the dynamic duo behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War) will be working with writer Frank Baldwin in adapting the original film into an hour-long drama series for Hulu. You can read more about that over at Deadline, which broke the news.
The Warriors getting the TV series treatment is incredible for a number of reasons. Few films truly deserve the title of cult classic quite like The Warriors. The 1979 film still holds plenty of cultural relevance today, and phrases like "Can you dig it?" and "Warriors, come out and play," are a part of America's film vocabulary. The movie revolves around the gang members of the Warriors, a group on the run and trying to get home after being framed for the murder of another gang leader.
All that being said, it's never been all that popular, even with its cult status. In fact, more than a few fans likely came to learn about The Warriors through a 2005 video game for Xbox and PlayStation 2 based on the film, developed and published by Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games. It made a bit of a splash back in the day. Not only did critics love the title, but it delivered great beat-'em-up action that hadn't been seen in a console game in quite some time.
That brings us to the second bit of The Warriors news for the day: the PS2 version of The Warriors game is now available on PlayStation 4 via the digital PlayStation store. The game is currently retailing for $14.99. If you're looking for a way to celebrate The Warriors TV news, we can't think of a better way than downloading the game and going to town on the gangs of New York.
It's a great day to be a fan of The Warriors. However, details on the new show are still scarce. Will the film be set in the 1970s like the original, or will it be in modern times? What changes can fans expect? Will new gangs be invented, or will all the old gangs seen in the film make a return? There are no answers for those questions so far, but that's to be expected. The original Deadline article announcing the series doesn't mention a time frame or year that fans can expect the show to arrive, and no director is currently attached to the project. It sounds like The Warriors television series is still in the early stages.
All that being said, it seems safe to say that fans of The Warriors are ready to come out and play.
