'Preacher' Renewed For Second Season: Five Questions We Want Answered In Season 1

Great news for fans of AMC's Preacher: the series just got renewed for a second season.

It seems that the show about a small town Texas preacher suddenly imbued with the power to make anyone do what he wants has become a hit for the network, in spite of airing opposite HBO's Game of Thrones.

"Preacher is a special television program and we're eager to share with fans the rest of this wild first season and, now, an expanded second season," AMC President Charlie Collier said. "What Sam [Catlin], Seth [Rogen], Evan [Goldberg] and the entire creative team have achieved in bringing Garth Ennis' graphic novel to the screen is extraordinary. We look forward to more time with these unforgettable characters be it in Heaven, Hell, Texas or beyond."

Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, an ex-criminal who returns to the town where he grew up to become its minister. While there, he gets possessed by a supernatural creature that grants him the ability to make people obey his every word.

Preacher is based on the Vertigo comic book series of the same name. The live-action adaptation has a sordid history, but AMC finally brought the story to life on its network this year. The television series, though, starts out differently from the comic books. The show almost serves as a prequel to the books, showing more of Jesse's backstory and how he gained his powers.

However, there are still some questions that we need answered in season one.

Will Jesse Kill His Congregation?

When Jesse becomes possessed in the comic books, the incident leaves his church flattened and kills his entire congregation. The TV show has already strayed from that, but will Jesse's church still get destroyed, maybe in the season finale? It's such a sticking point with the plot and has a lot to do with Jesse's character development, it should become a part of the series.

Will Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy Hit The Road?

The Preacher comic books don't spend a lot of time in Texas. Instead, the three main characters live on the road, traveling from town to town, where they encounter more enemies, including a serial killer, fallen angels, Jesse's family and a secret organization that controls the world and protects the bloodline of Jesus. The Preacher comic book is a road trip adventure, and the TV series could benefit from that.

Who Killed Jesse's Father?

The TV show keeps showing flashbacks of someone killing Jesse's father, but viewers never see the murderer. Is this something that gets revealed in season one? How relevant will it become to the plot? It's likely that this is important information about who Jesse really is and why he returned to Annville to become the church's minister there.

Who Was That Man in 1881?

In episode five, the television series shows a flashback scene from 1881, with a cowboy that rides a horse for three days to get to Ratwater, Texas. Who is he? What importance does he have to the world of Preacher and to Jesse? For those who read the Preacher comic books, the answer is already there, but it will probably take the show some time to reveal who this man really is.

Why Did Arseface Try To Kill Himself?

The character of Arseface is a little different on the TV show than in the comics, so it's likely that his history and the reasoning behind his suicide attempt are different, too. The show depicts a character that's struggling with his faith, so perhaps that has something to do with why he turned to suicide.

Preacher airs on AMC on Sundays at 9 p.m. EDT.
