‘Overwatch’ Hero Spotlight: A Beginner’s Guide To Widowmaker

On the battlefield, your goal is imperative. If you only believe in getting the job done regardless of the cost, then Widowmaker may be the Overwatch hero for you.

Her Story

Widowmaker once went by the name Amélie Lacroix, a 33-year-old woman from Annecy, France. It was believed that she was married to an Overwatch agent, Gérard Lacroix, who spearheaded operations against the Talon terrorist organization. Talon has made several attempts on Gérard's life, and as these were unsuccessful, they decided to shift focus and target Amélie instead.

Kidnapped and subjected to intense neural reconditioning, Amélie broke, her will and personality suppressed and reprogrammed to become a sleeper agent. She returned to her normal life after some time, killing her husband in his sleep within two weeks of her return.

Amélie went back to Talon after completing her mission, also completing the process of turning herself into a living weapon and giving birth to Widowmaker. She was given further training in the covert arts and even had her physiology altered, which resulted in her heart drastically slowing down and turning her skin blue and cold. This also numbed any ability she had left in experiencing human emotion, save for the satisfaction of a well-executed kill.

Her Abilities

Widow's Kiss – Widowmaker has a versatile sniper rifle that is deadly at all ranges. Far away, she can aim shots at targets while she can fire at them with a fully-automatic weapon at medium to close range.

Grappling Hook – A grappling hook is launched toward any location, connecting Widowmaker to any scalable surface. She can flank or evade targets while in air, as well as expand her view of the battlefield.

Venom Mine – A small contraption filled with venom is quickly attached to any surface. When a target is within range, Venom Mine is armed, exploding to deliver poison gas to enemies.

Infra-Sight – Heat signatures of targets behind objects and walls are visible for a certain period of time through Widowmaker's recon visor. Whatever she sees is then shared with the rest of her team.

Heroes She Is Weak Against

D.Va – Widowmaker has one of the highest skill-caps in Overwatch, but this doesn't matter to D.Va, as she can use jump jets to close the gap, activate her Defense Matrix for protection and fire away at close range. If Widowmaker tries to escape by running away or using her Grappling Hook, D.Va can still chase her down.

Genji – He can use Deflect to send Widowmaker's bullets back to her and is also a threat at close range. Even if Genji doesn't kill her off, his presence and persistence can force Widowmaker to lay off her targets for a while.

Heroes She Is Strong Against

McCree – His lack of mobility makes McCree an easy target for snipers like Widowmaker, even when he's using his Ultimate.

Pharah – Letting her rain down rockets may do a lot of damage, but flying actually slows down Pharah. This makes it easy for Widowmaker to take her down when she's in the air.

Bastion – Widowmaker can target Bastion from afar, dealing lethal damage without incurring damage of her own.

Hanzo – While he's a formidable force at long range, Hanzo can be counter-sniped.

Zenyatta – His lack of mobility and his small health pool are his downfall.

Tips

1. Don't wait too long to aim. Headshots are ideal, but it's better to deal some level of damage than none at all.

2. Keep pursuers at bay by using Venom Mine generously.

3. Move around. Once you take a shot, the other team will be alerted to where the sniper is.

4. Widowmaker has low health and a powerful rifle, so she is best suited for long-range attacks. However, she can also be deadly at close range since her weapon also doles out fully-automatic fire.

5. Watch out for Widowmakers in the enemy team. If anyone's going to be taking out Widowmaker, it's going to take someone of her caliber.
