A Microsoft executive has announced that gamers should not lose hope, as Xbox One may still get a TV DVR (digital video recording) function.
During the 2015 Gamescom in August last year, Microsoft revealed its plans to launch free TV DVR functionality in 2016. The feature will allow gamers to record TV shows from their Xbox One. The feature is also expected to support Windows 10, which will allow users to watch recorded content on a PC or other devices.
While Xbox One owners were eagerly waiting for the feature, Microsoft confirmed in early June this year that the feature was on temporary hold.
"After careful consideration, we've decided to put development of DVR for Over-the-Air TV on hold to focus our attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming experiences across Xbox One and Windows 10," said a Microsoft spokesperson. "We're always listening to fan feedback and we look forward to bringing more requested experiences on Xbox One, Windows 10 and Xbox Live this year."
Microsoft's decision to put the TV DVR on hold also led to many disappointed fans who took to social media to share their concerns.
"I bought a haupagge tv tuner specifically for this feature! I don't even need it with out this feature," complained a Reddit user.
"It's disappointing that they're putting 'on hold' something that they told us was an upcoming confirmed feature. Feels like 2013 again where they are backtracking and pandering to 'hardcore gamers' instead of moving forward with cool new features like the all-digital games, family sharing, physical/digital being the same thing, etc.," wrote another upset gamer.
However, Dave McCarthy, the general manager at Microsoft Game Studios, hinted that even though TV DVR is on hold, the functionality may still come to the gaming console.
"We look at that User Feedback site on a regular basis and try and respond to what people want the most. I wouldn't rule it out entirely, over time," says McCarthy.
The general manager added that the company has to make tough decisions and prioritize resources in areas they think need more attention.
An estimated released date of TV DVR for Xbox One is not known. However, Microsoft suggests that the company listens to customer feedback, so users should voice their requirements on Xbox feedback page as this may increase the chances of the functionality making its way to Xbox One soon.
Xbox One owners will now have to wait until Microsoft officially confirms a release date for TV DVR on its latest gaming console.
