Destiny's next expansion Rise of Iron will be available only to the latest-generation gaming consoles, Sony PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Microsoft Xbox One.
Destiny is a first-person shooter video game developed by Bungie and published by Activision. The game was released in September 2014 for Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3), PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
In a recent announcement, Bungie confirmed that the next expansion for the game, which will be released in September this year, will not be available for legacy consoles Xbox 360 and PS3.
"Destiny: Rise of Iron will be available exclusively on current generation consoles - PlayStation 4 and Xbox One," says Bungie. "Our goal is always to bring every player from this awesome community along for the ride as we continue the story of Destiny, but we will also continue to support players who elect not to upgrade their console hardware."
Legacy console owners should note that from August, the progression of characters will not be shared with older hardware and new gaming consoles.
"Characters progress separately on two parallel paths," reads an infographic on a Bungie blog.
Gamers will be able to import their character from a legacy console to the PS4 or Xbox One. However, the experience gained by the characters on newer consoles will not carry over to the legacy consoles. Bungie has also listed full details of account importing on its support page.
The Taken King, an expansion for Destiny that was released in September 2015, will continue to be available on legacy consoles. However, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 gamers will have limited access to future game updates and content releases, as well as some Destiny events and content. Access to new Eververse Item purchases across console generations will also be limited.
Owners of Legacy Consoles will also have limited access to Silver purchases and some Destiny companion features on the mobile app and Bungie.net.
Destiny: Rise of Iron is a very highly anticipated and large expansion and Destiny fans have been waiting eagerly for its release.
"We have been working hard with our partners at Bungie and are planning great, new content for Destiny's 30 million registered players. Rise of Iron is the first step in fulfilling that promise," says Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision. "There's a ton of content packed in Rise of Iron, including a new location, a new Raid and a new Strike, combined with more quests, weapons, gear, a competitive multiplayer mode and more that we think players are going to love."
The latest announcement from Bungie may not affect PS4 and Xbox One owners. However, gamers who own either a PS3 or Xbox 360 will be disappointed with the announcement and will have no choice but to purchase the latest-gen gaming console to keep playing Destiny and its future expansions.
