It doesn't matter where you go: Game of Thrones will find you.
With the season six finale debuting last night, the world is once again enthralled with HBO's fantasy epic. Even if you don't watch the show, there's a good chance that lines like "Hold the door!" are burned into your memory — that's just how widespread the show's influence is.
So far, Game of Thrones hasn't made too much of an impact on the gaming industry. Telltale Games' take on the universe was well-received, but played a bit too safely to really stick out — otherwise, you'd be hard-pressed to find an adaptation that's actually worth playing.
Microsoft is taking things in the opposite direction: rather than trying to cram the ridiculous amount of lore into a single game, the publisher has just announced a new, Game of Thrones-inspired console. It might not be the tribute that fans were expecting, but it's already a lot better than that RPG from 2012.
In all seriousness, the new Game of Thrones Xbox One is gorgeous — too bad it's not up for sale.
Microsoft's new Xbox One console isn't extremely expensive, nor is it a part of some extremely limited-edition run: as it turns out, the publisher's console-based tribute to HBO's mega-hit series is part of a Game of Thrones contest ... that's currently underway in France.
To celebrate the show's season six finale, Xbox France is giving away three of the custom Game of Thrones-themed consoles across its different social media channels. Given that the contest is being held by one of Microsoft's European branches, it's safe to assume that the giveaway is only open to those who are actually living in France.
That being said, there are no concrete regional restrictions mentioned on any of the posts, so it's unclear as to who can actually enter. It's a long shot, but if a retweet is the only thing standing between fans and a brand new Game of Thrones Xbox One, what's there to lose?
Either way, there's no denying just how pretty the Game of Thrones Xbox One is. Who knows, maybe if there's enough demand, Microsoft will consider releasing a limited-edition run?
Shiny new console or not, fans of the show will still have to wait quite some time before the next new episode airs: Game of Thrones' seventh season is set to debut sometime in early 2017.
