Blizzard's colorful shooter Overwatch has had no trouble fitting in. Almost instantly, the game has enjoyed widespread success at just about every level, with fanart, cosplay, jokes and of course, massive sales.
If your game spawns a meme template, it seems safe to assume you've got a success on your hands. That's exactly what happened with Overwatch, thanks to the shooter's "play of the game" mechanic. At the end of each match, Overwatch looks for moments of great skill (or a well-placed ultimate ability) in order to award one player a "play of the game." That "play" is then displayed for every player in the match in a fashion similar to that of a highlight reel.
Simple, right? Turns out it's that simplicity that has caused the feature to take on a life of its own outside of the game. Fans have begun to put together "play of the game" videos for all kinds of things, ranging from classic films to even other video games. Perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise, then, that there are a number of Game of Thrones-inspired "play of the game" videos, including some from season six's penultimate episode "Battle of the Bastards."
Spoilers for Game of Thrones below! Don't watch if you're not caught up.
First up is Jon Snow going to town on some Bolton soldiers. It's certainly play of the game material. No doubt, Jon mains Genji.
Ramsay also had a major "shutdown" moment when he sniped Rickon Stark from across a field in true Hanzo fashion.
In all honesty, Littlefinger most definitely won the game for House Stark, though with a different kind of cavalry than Overwatch fans are used to hearing about.
Greyworm also showed off his skills in the latest episode.
Overwatch's "play of the game" joke exists as a way to highlight any pivotal moment from just about anything, which is perhaps why it works so well in Game of Thrones. Every episode is filled with game- (or show-) changing events, so throwing the Overwatch text font and the game's iconic music in front of a key scene never seems to fail.
