Hulu is expanding its presence in virtual reality after the company unveiled that its VR app features Oculus Rift compatibility.
In March, Hulu VR entered the scene as the service landed on the Samsung Gear VR. A previous release was scheduled for November 2015, but the company postponed the launch.
Hulu allows its users to subscribe to the streaming service, granting them access to content in 360-degree virtual reality environments. For example, you can immerse yourself in a movie or TV series while the VR headset simulates a beach, a movie theater or a modern living room.
The powerful and costly Oculus Rift is now ready to offer the best Hulu experience, reinforcing the service's pledge to VR.
Hulu offers a VR library, but its offer does not stop here. The company inked a deal with Syfy channel producers, allowing users a unique experience when watching the network's 12 Monkeys show on Hulu.
"[Hulu VR provides] the space which includes real time rendered environments and animations that make you feel like you're living in the show itself," the company says.
The "Temporal Facility" permits fans to virtually take a tour of the fictional time machine that appears in the show. Hulu says that it plans to deliver a myriad of similar VR experiences tailored after its content, increasing users' attraction to the app.
It may be true that the 2D viewing room in the app still has a long way to go before becoming "the" VR experience. However, as Hulu continues to enlarge its proprietary VR library, users could be convinced to tap into the streaming service by using VR headsets instead of monitors or TVs.
Keep in mind that Hulu VR lets users enjoy exclusive content captured or created by names such as Showtime Sport, National Geographic or RocketJump.
The Big One is probably the most memorable piece of VR content that you can watch on Hulu VR. The film is an exclusive production and the first virtual reality title that Hulu created. The cinematic piece is the product of the collaboration between Lionsgate, RocketJump and YouTube creator Freddie Wong, and features a meteor shower that falls straight toward Earth.
Not to spoil the ending, but the engorging visual feast can transform into a dramatic event.
After the streaming service landed on the Gear VR from Samsung and the Oculus Rift, we look forward to it making its entry on the HTC Vive as well.
