HBO recently announced actors Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell would play two of the four leads in the second season of True Detective, with Taylor Kitsch expected to land a role as the show's third. That leaves one more lead role open, and staying true to rumors of the past several weeks, according to Variety HBO is bringing actress Rachel McAdams on board.
Variety says that while several other actresses have been in the running for the part, McAdams has long been a frontrunner. Sources tell the site HBO has officially offered McAdams the part.
Initially it seemed as if there might be scheduling conflicts if McAdams were to join the next season of True Detective. She was about to start filming for the drama Spotlight, revolving around the Catholic Church sex scandal uncovered by the Boston Globe. Sources tell Variety that in the last 24 hours a deal has been worked out where McAdams could do both projects.
As for who McAdams will be playing in the show, she will likely be a cop alongside Kitsch's and Farrell's characters, while Vaughn is expected to play a career criminal in the all new story separate from the first season. The second season will take place in California as the three police officers and crime boss navigate a vast conspiracy after Vince Vaughn's partner is murdered.
Previous rumors stated the conspiracy would revolve around a corrupt transportation scheme after the murder of a public official, but none of that is confirmed. Sources tell Variety that McAdam's cop character will get a similar response from fans of Matthew McConaughey's role as Rust Cohle in season one of the show.
Justin Lin will be directing the two episodes of season two, and show creator Nic Pazzolatto is still writing the script for the season. HBO President Michael Lombardo during a press tour said that from what he has read of the new season, "The two scripts we have are...more exciting than the first season."
McAdams will be appearing in numerous projects in 2015, including the Jake Gyllenhaal boxing film Southpaw. She can be seen most recently in A Most Wanted Man. HBO has yet to officially confirm McAdams involvement in season two, but an announcement could be coming soon. True Detective season two will air sometime in the summer of 2015 on HBO.
