True Detective was one of HBO's biggest hits this past year, but the show also left fans with a lot of questions. Not about the plot or its characters, but about the future of the show itself.
True Detective is an anthology, which means that the stories in season one and season two will be completely different. The show's creator, Nic Pizzolatto, confirmed that the second season of True Detective would feature new main characters, but who are they? Who will play them? Will there be any connection to the first season whatsoever?
At the very least, fans have the answer to one of those questions: HBO confirmed that both Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn will star in the second season of True Detective.
Colin Farrell will star as one of three main characters, playing police officer Ray Velcoro. HBO describes Velcoro as "a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him."
Vince Vaughn, on the other hand, will star as Frank Seymon, a criminal gone straight whom HBO describes as "a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner."
How these two will end up working together is unknown, though HBO stated the second season would be about "three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder."
True Detective was incredibly well-received when it debuted on HBO, launching to universal acclaim and taking home several different awards at a number of different shows. The series was praised for its story, setting, cinematography and writing; it was a universal success and an unexpected hit for HBO.
In terms of production, HBO confirmed that the second season will leave behind Louisiana as its primary setting and head west to California. Where the first season was directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, Pizzolatto confirmed that each episode of the second season will be directed by a different person, starting with Fast and the Furious director Justin Lin. Shooting is set to begin this fall, and while no premiere date has been set, the eight-episode season is expected to begin around summer 2015.
