The Friday the 13th game always sounded like a great idea, but it remained to be seen if the development team could deliver on their lofty promises. Now, it's E3 week, and alongside dozens of new games and announcements comes fresh gameplay footage of Friday the 13th: The Game in action.
In short, it looks to be exactly what fans have been asking for. The new four-minute video shows off gameplay from both the perspective of Jason as well as the helpless teens looking to flee the machete-wielding killer.
As in the films, Jason has the ability to seemingly appear out of nowhere when players least expect it. The character is slow and menacing, yet able to teleport, and playing him requires a keen understanding of the various film-based environments and where to best ambush players controlling the teenagers. Jason can also hear noise from long distances, allowing him to zone in on players who aren't careful with their movements.
The teenagers, on the other hand, aren't so powerful. They can try to run and hide, and can even fend off Jason's attacks for a short time, but they are ultimately mostly defenseless if caught by the unstoppable horror icon. Teens can hide as well, but as the gameplay footage shows, that doesn't always work out. Sprinting around the environment won't save the teenagers, so they'll have to play it smart if they want to survive the night.
Of course, it wouldn't be a Friday the 13th game without some brutal violence on display, and so far, the title looks to deliver. The footage shows Jason performing three different executions on his victims. The environment is Jason's tool of destruction, as he bashes heads into walls and rocks. Blood spatter and curb stomps are par for the course here, and fans wouldn't have it any other way. Not to worry though; Jason's machete sees some action, too. It is just as deadly as it looks, as one teenager learns the hard way.
Check out the footage below and see it for yourself. Keep in mind that this footage is still from the alpha build of the title, but it nonetheless looks promising. Friday the 13th: The Game raised more than $820,000 last year on Kickstarter last year. The game is currently scheduled to release this fall for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, just in time for Halloween.
