After a long dry spell during Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, more Star Wars video games are finally set to arrive in the coming years, thanks to a partnership between Disney and EA. To say that it will make a huge impact on the world of gaming is an understatement.
EA's Star Wars Battlefront released during the holiday season of last year and went on to become one of the best-selling games of 2015.
No doubt, EA is hoping that will continue to be the trend as the publisher puts out more and more Star Wars adventures in coming years. During EA's E3 press conference, fans got a glimpse at all the Star Wars goodness to come in the form of a three-minute "development diary"-style video.
Jumping from development team to development team, it wasn't much. The video mostly shows new concept art and offers up a few additional details about what to expect from EA's Star Wars games in the coming years. Here's everything we know so far, starting with what's coming down the pipe for Star Wars Battlefront later this year.
Star Wars Battlefront DLC
EA revealed a brief glimpse at Star Wars Battlefront's upcoming Bespin DLC, which will feature Lando Calrissian as a playable hero. There is also a look at what appears to be a developer working on content for the game's upcoming Death Star DLC. Fans can clearly see a trench run, and it appears the bounty hunter Bossk may be one of the new playable heroes.
Star Wars Battlefront PlayStation VR
Criterion Games, known for the Burnout series, is working on a first-person PlayStation VR experience that will put players in the cockpit of an X-Wing. Once again, it wasn't much to go on, but it certainly sounds cool.
Star Wars Battlefront 2
Next year, fans will get another installment in the Star Wars Battlefront franchise. There's a brief glimpse of it in development during the video, with the project being partly developed by Jade Raymond's EA Motive studio. Judging by the images on various computer screens during this portion of the video, it seems clear Star Wars Battlefront 2 will feature content from the new films, including Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Whether or not the prequels will also be included remains to be seen.
Respawn Entertainment's New Game
It wasn't too long ago that Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment announced it would be working on a new Star Wars game. Given how recently that news came about, it's not surprising EA doesn't have anything to show for the game, but we do get a glimpse at some motion capture lightsaber combat going on at the studio. This seems to indicate that Respawn's Star Wars title might be an action game of sort, possibly one with an emphasis on lightsaber combat.
Amy Hennig And Visceral's Third-Person Action Game
By far the most anticipated upcoming game on this list, EA teased more about this title than any other Star Wars-related project. Fans finally got a glimpse at concept art from the film as well as an oh-so-brief glimpse of in-game footage set on Mos Eisley. It looks like Tatooine will be front and center in the new game, which is said to focus on a group of smugglers. Judging from the Star Destroyers and Imperial insignias, it looks like the game will take place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
Despite having numerous Star Wars projects in the work, EA didn't have much to show for it. Many of these projects, however, are still in the early stages. Fans can expect plenty more at next year's E3, but for now, this brief glimpse will have to suffice.
